Scott Stars Race to Mental and Physical Well-Being

For the past 17 years, school psychologist Kim Perales has coached the Scott Elementary School Run Club, sponsored by BstrongBfit and a 21C grant. Kim’s passion for the physical and mental well-being of her students as well as her passion for track and field created a track club that centers around: mental health, mind-body connection, emotional regulation, and community.

“Because of a coach, I’m happier.”

With a smile, Kim said, “Physical activity is key to emotional regulation.”

Students were mentored by accomplished track athletes and coaches during this school year. Coach Dunte Hector from SHIFT Speed Coaching regularly exchanged video logs with the club. In these logs, he had the students solve math problems and taught the importance of physical movement and mental growth.

“Because of a coach, I’m more confident.”

Josh Torres, a Northridge High School Alum, HS distance record holder, and former CU Boulder cross country runner, ran with and mentored the boy runners every other week. Torres also coached track and field and cross country at Northridge High School this school year. Alex M., a former University of Wyoming soccer player, worked with the girl students this year, sharpening their skills in track and field.

Our incredible Scott Stars participated in a couple track meets this year, building confidence and testing their speed. At the end of the school year, the club students, Scott teachers, and coaches celebrated with a relay and popsicles.

“Because of a coach, I like running way better.”

We are thankful for Kim, Dunte, Josh, Alex, and all of the Scott Elementary staff who support the Scott Elementary Run Club!
